for more information. These classes offer intensive flute study balanced with activities to rejuvenate mind,
body and spirit in the peaceful, scenic surroundings of the Holy
Cross Monastery & Retreat Center, on the Hudson River.
The master class will be conducted as a
series of open lessons. Mr. Schocker's teaching is highly
individualized. He is able to pinpoint how people play,
physically, and offer other specific options for exploration to
enhance performance. His work as a composer has enhanced his
ability to understand musical construction which he also discusses
and demonstrates.
Gary Schocker is a longtime student of
the Alexander Technique, as well as other mind/body methods, and
applies his own experience to his flute teaching. His approach is
positive and encouraging. This class will be of interest to traditional
students, as well as longtime teachers and performers who may be
interested in exploring a different approach to making music. Each
session will be limited to 18 performers. Course includes master class flute instruction,
an Alexander Technique workshop by Bill Connington, a
world-renowned Alexander teacher; yoga sessions, meditation
workshop, a get acquainted ice cream party, final concert in St.
Augustine's Chapel, and ensemble playing.
Accommodations: Each resident participant will have a
private room. Three hearty meals daily prepared by the Monastery
chef are included for residents. Lunch and dinner are included for
commuters.
Repertory: Any flute repertoire is
acceptable for the class. Mr. Schocker's works are especially
welcome. The emphasis for this class will be on learning and
improving skills in a non-competitive and supportive environment.
Age and playing level are not as important as a desire to learn
and enjoy music.
