Gary Schocker has been composing since his first piece at the age of 5. His compositions span a vivid array of styles, from chamber music to musical theatre. He has published more music for the flute than any other living composer.

Award-Winning Compositions

Mr. Schocker has won the National Flute Association's Competition for Newly Published Works many times, most recently with Peregrinations for Two Flutes in 2006. His 10 Etudes for Flute was the 2002 winner, performed at the National Convention in August 2002. His Bach Partita Ghost, an obbligato to the unaccompanied Partita in A Minor, won in 2000. Also selected was his Three Dances for Two Flutes, which has taken on a life of its own, having been performed widely by many flutists, including James Galway, who also gave the premiere of Schocker's concerto "Green Places" at the Adare Festival in Ireland, and the American premiere with the New Jersey Symphony.

His Clarinet Sonata and Two Clarinet Sonata have won successive competitions held by the International Clarinet Association, and since have been featured internationally, performed by the world's finest clarinetists. The two clarinet sonata was recently recorded by Stanley Drucker and Naomi Drucker with Blanche Abrams for ERI.

Musical Theatre

Mr. Schocker's other great love is musical theater, for which he has written three musicals: Far From The Madding Crowd, The Awakening, and Dusky Sally. Far From the Madding Crowd was presented in New York City in Fall 2004 as a winner of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. The Awakening was part of the ASCAP 2001 New Musicals Series and was one of 9 musicals chosen for the inaugural Global Search for New Musicals Sony Showcases. The Showcases were held at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, Wales, from November 1 - 3, 2002.

.    Far From The Madding Crowd was part of the 2000 National Alliance of Musical Theatre Festival in New York and had its first production in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2000.
